The Institute for International Education-IIE in collaboration with HUIS – International School of Hue University and the world’s leading education and training organization-National Geographic Learning organized the workshop to foster teaching capacity to support professional development exclusively for English teachers in Central Vietnam.
(How Can I Become a Modern Teacher? Practical Tips for Development)
The event was honored to have the presence and sharing of 2 speakers: Dr. Tran Xuan Thao (Director of the Institute of International Education, Ph.D. in Higher Education Management of Pennsylvania Univerisity, Former Fulbright Program Director Vietnam, Advisor of International School of Hue University) and Mr. Andrew Duenas (Senior ELT Consultant in Academic and Training at National Geographic Learning).
Dr. Tran Xuan Thao had been teaching English at Hue University of Education since 1977. He then received his Master’s degree in TESOL from the University of Canberra, Australia in 1990. After serving as Dean of the English Department at Hue University of Education, he received his Ph.D. in Educational Management from the University of Pennsylvania (Ivy League) in 1998. Since returning to Vietnam, he has held important positions such as Director of the Fulbright Vietnam Program at the U.S. Embassy, Vice President of Tan Tao University, Director of Openminds International Center – at Ton Duc Thang University, Vice Chancellor of International Cooperation and Development of Van Lang University, Director in charge of all international relations and training links of Van Lang Education Management & Investment Joint Stock Company. Tran Xuan Thao is currently the Director of the Institute of International Education – IIE and Educational Advisor of International School of Hue University.
The another speaker was Andrew Duenas, Senior ELT Consultant for Academics and Training at National Geographic Learning. He has taught English to children and adults in both Korea and Vietnam for over 12 years in general English, academic English, business writing skills, and exam preparation. He earned a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics. He has also been working in teacher training and development since 2017 and has trained hundreds of teachers, teaching assistants, and school administrators across Vietnam. For learners of all ages, Andrew’s approach focuses on ensuring all students can participate, regardless of class size or proficiency level. For teachers, this approach is intended to help them develop confidence in the classroom to teach with passion and purpose. This is especially interesting for Andrew because he believes that all students have the potential to achieve great things with the guidance and dedication of patient teachers.
All times of the event focused on discussing modern, practical, and interactive teaching methods, applicable to a variety of teaching situations. These methods are from ELTeach 3.0, National Geographic Learning’s professional development course for English teachers.
In addition, the event also featured an introduction to National Geographic Learning’s newly released “TEACH ENGLISH WITH CONFIDENCE” curriculum and series, as well as instructions on how to use the materials to help teachers understand effective English teaching methods.
